If you are lining chimneys or intend to line chimneys you need to demonstrate your competence by obtaining the NVQ (level 2) in Chimney Engineering.
The NVQ is not a formal examination. You demonstrate competence over a period of time with on-site assessments and if necessary, training in those areas where competence is lacking.
The NVQ is about;
- Interpreting information
- Adopting safe and healthy working practices
- Selecting materials, components and equipment
- Cleaning and preparing chimney structures
- Lining chimney structures and flues.
The NVQ is obtained by developing, along with your assessor, a portfolio of evidence which covers the performance criteria in a number of mandatory and optional units.
In addition it is necessary to show that you have the knowledge and understanding required by a competent chimney engineer.
Although much of the work of a chimney engineer is not carried out on major construction sites it is still necessary to work efficiently and safely. Therefore before the NVQ can be awarded it is necessary to pass the ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test.
